RIUH Cheat Sheet: Guide to Local Halloween Spooks!

It’s that time of year again where ghosts and ghouls become a friendly face in the crowd as Halloween creeps nearer. While Malaysians don’t typically go door-to-door yelling “Trick O’ Treat!” to get a bag of candies in the neighbourhood, there’s still a bunch of fun stuff to indulge in and spook up your night!

1. Scream at Your Screen

Ah, a classic. Dim the lights, snuggle up in a warm blanket and grab some sweet treats as you put on a bone-chilling movie for you to yell at. The local horror movie scene is definitely not one to miss and we recommend you check out local flicks Munafik, Dukun, Karak and Roh this Halloween. These are cult favourites that are guaranteed to get your heart rate up with it’s relatable relevance to local folklore and popular urban legends.

If you miss the big screens and want to head to the theatres instead, be sure to check out Malignant, a supernatural horror film directed by Kuching-born James Wan, creator of The Conjuring Universe. Grab that bucket of buttery popcorn and be prepared for thrills and chills.

Looking to get your hands on something creative? Two words: Halloween Makeup! Halloween is a celebration that literally revolves around dressing up, so it’s the perfect time for you to whip out those makeup brushes and colourful palettes and get your hands dirty with some eerie looks. Check out these Malaysian Avant-Garde Makeup Artists for some inspo before you get cracking at them yourself. For more easy ideas, here is a Tik Tok by local content creator, Rae on her tutorial of a Purge Mask using only some bright pigments and concealer. Seems like a fun look to recreate!

6. Scary Stories

There’s nothing like listening to a supposedly “real-life” encounter of the supernatural from someone you know personally. Set up a virtual or physical hangout with some friends across drinks and desserts where each of you are to exchange personal horror stories.

Now here’s the fun bit: Add rules and regulations to the night. We recommend the rule that “Everything is true, even if it isn’t”, similar to the by-laws of the popular Reddit thread, r/nosleep (psst! r/no sleep) features some pretty creepy stories. Definitely check it out too). With that in place, tales of dormroom scares, highway spirits, hotel horrors and other hair-raising experiences will come pouring out to give you a thrilling chill.
